National language of Sri Lanka

The national languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhalese & Tamil

National flower of Sri Lanka is  blue water lily (Nimphaea nouchali)

In February 1986 the Nil Manel (Nymphaea stellata) Blue Water Lily was chosen as the national flower of Sri Lanka. Nil Manel is found all the part of Sri Lanka and grows in the shallow water. The Blue Water Lily of superb beauty is a general view all over the island. There are three types of Authentic Water Lilies in Sri Lanka such as Olu, the Nil Manel and the Nelum. The Blue Water Lily blooms wherever ponds, lakes,  or marsh land is found and it blooms from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. – almost the full day. It is with the sun rays that the Manel opens and shows the world attractive pink color. Blooming in shades of pink, blue and white on magenta with yellow in the middle, and also this plant has its roots deep in muddy waters.

National Tree of Sri Lanka is  Ceylon ironwood (Mesua ferrea)

Ceylon ironwood (Mesua Nagassarium) was announced the national tree of Sri Lanka on 26 February 1986. The colorful tree is endemic to Sri Lanka and commonly found in national parks, jungle and temples. It was chosen as the national tree due to its endemism in Sri Lanka, utility, historic & cultural importance, exterior posture, wide distribution, color and nature and ability to draw and sketch easily.

National bird of Sri Lanka is  Sri Lankan jungle fowl (Gallus lafayettii)

The Ceylon jungle fowl(Gallus Lafayettii) is the official national bird. The multicolored bird is endemic to Sr Lanka and generally found in jungle, national parks and thick scrub.

National butterfly of Sri Lanka is  Sri Lankan birdwing (Troides darsius)

This butterfly is endemic to Sri Lanka and was announced as the national butterfly with a connection to the butterfly conservation action plan. This butterfly has attractive look with black and yellow colors wings. 

National gemstone of Sri Lanka is  blue sapphire

It was declared as national gemstone in October 2003. Sri Lanka is very famous for blue sapphires since in the ancient time. By the durability, scarceness and beauty this is a valuable beinness of the world. We can find more valuable gemstones at Rathnapura in Sri Lanka.

National Sport of Sri Lanka is  Volleyball

 

In 1991 volleyball was officially identified as the national sport of Sri Lanka. The sport was introduced in 1916 to Sri Lanka. Elle had identification as a national sport before volleyball it is shows similarity to volleyball.

National animals of Sri Lanka

There is no official national animal in Sri Lanka but the Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), Lion (Panthera leo) and  Giant squirrel (Ratufa Macroura) are locally considered as such.

National monument of Sri Lanka is Independence Memorial Hall

Independence Memorial Hall is an iconic structure commemorating the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule. Named “Magul Maduwa”, its structure is based on the Royal Audience Hall of the Kingdom of Kandy, the last kingdom that fell to colonial occupation in the island.

National dress of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka does not acknowledge any national dress since there are three major communities and a few minor communities. Commonly, men’s traditional dress is the sarong/dhoti and shirt and women’s traditional dress is a sari. The three major communities (Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims) have significant differences in their regional dress although the majority of them wear Western dress today.

National dish of Sri Lanka is Rice & curry

Rice and curry is a popular dish in Sri Lanka. The dish has cooked rice with various curry dishes(vegetable or meat)

Classical creations were done by our ancient forbears
